USDA Updates Requirements for Animal Labelling Guidelines
The United States Department of Agriculture's Food and Safety Inspection Service recently proposed updating their requirements for animal food labels under the Federal Meat Inspection Act, affecting whether meat producers can label their animals as “grass-fed,” “raised without antibiotics,” and “free-range.” The Department will require detailed documentation for each claim that appears on a label. The latest change is an effort to reduce the Department's role in reviewing each proposed label by clarifying label requirements for producers.
